Polyplastic is a supplier to the caravan and campervan industry. For more than 50 years, they have provided a variety of solutions to manufacturers of recreational vehicles ranging from windows to sunroofs and shutters. They produce window panes made of PMMA, also known as acrylic or perspex.
The process (as it was before)
After producing these window panes, they are coloured by means of screen printing. The screen frame needs to be cleaned in between for the final cleaning to be done after the production run. The intermediate cleaning is done on the screen frame in the carousel in place with a strong solvent, so the employee can continue production for a number of rounds afterwards. When the windows are all printed, the screen frame is removed and taken to a screen frame washing line for final cleaning. Afterwards, the screen frame is stored for later use.
Re-thinking (as it is now)
The screen frames used to be cleaned (both interim and final cleaning) with a thinner-like solvent. Polyplastic has a strong focus on continuously improving the organisation and they wanted to use safe products for their employees. Jorn Haverkamp and Martin Isarin, responsible for Research and Testing, started working on this. For intermediate cleaning, the ecological Safeco Special was recommended because it needed to be slightly more volatile so production could continue quickly afterwards. For final cleaning in the washing line, E.P. Proplex was recommended. It is also an ecological cleaner with a high flash point and completely free of hazard symbols. Both are fully biodegradable.
Contributing ideas, full service and saving costs
An added advantage of E.P. Proplex is that it is regenerated after use and then returned to the customer for reuse. At least 60% of clean material is recovered from 1000 litres of contaminated material collected. This represents an enormous cost saving and is also good for Polyplastic’s ecological footprint.
