Health and safety at work are high on the agenda for many companies. For example, you may already be paying attention to ergonomics, offering a healthy selection in the canteen and encouraging an active lifestyle. Do you ever stop to think about the products that employees use in activities such as maintenance, cleaning and degreasing?
Our expert engineer Jacco Quist takes you through the health risks and how to eliminate them:
You probably knew that thinner, acetone, benzene, alcohol and MEK are not good for your employees’ health. But how do you know exactly what the risks are? And which products contain dangerous materials? You will find the answer on the label. Hazard symbols indicate the type of hazard; H and P phrases inform you of the hazard characteristics and safety recommendations. If your product has a hazard symbol, the supplier is obliged to provide a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) detailing the risks to health and safety.
Products with hazard symbols may be toxic, aggressive, intoxicating, irritating, flammable, explosive or carcinogenic or may even affect your reproduction or pregnancy. Did you know that as many as 1 in 6 employees run the risk of a serious illness such as COPD, asthma or lung cancer? The figures on the number of deaths are also clear: 4,100 people die from an occupational disease in the Netherlands every year, of which 3,000 are from working with hazardous substances. Symptoms are not always immediate: the effects of working with hazardous substances are often only noticeable years later.
It is important to take workplace safety seriously. Because of this, I would advise you to take a critical look at what products your employees use for maintenance, cleaning and degreasing. To what extent are safety measures observed, such as wearing goggles, gloves and ventilating the room?
