Ethanol substitute

Eco-Point’s industrial solutions

Eco-Point has a number of products that can be used as an ethanol substitute. Several of these ethanol substitutes (Safeco, Natusafe and Biosafe RTU) have a high flash point and do not require any hazard symbols, so unlike ethanol they are very safe to work with. For degreasing purposes, these products are at least equivalent to ethanol. For cleaning glass we recommend Hyprox and Glasprox EV. E.P. Hyprox is a safe, water-dilutable alternative to all types of hazardous, harmful and environmentally damaging ethanol-based cleaners used to clean windows and computer hardware. It is fully biodegradable and in diluted form has a safe, high flash point. Glasprox EV is a hazard symbol-free cleaner for removing atmospheric pollution, skin oils, smoke deposits, etc. from glass, plastic and metal. It has a safe, high flash point, a pleasant smell and guarantees good degradability.

What exactly is ethanol alcohol?

Alcohol is a generic term. Ethanol is in the category of alcohols, a class of substances in chemistry. There are different kinds of alcohol. The best known variant is ethanol (also called ethyl alcohol).

What is ethanol used for?

It can be used for industrial purposes, but also for human consumption, for example in medicines or drinks. Ethyl alcohol has a disinfecting effect and is a volatile substance. This means it evaporates quickly. It is also highly flammable. Due to its high evaporation rate and fat solubility, ethanol is still widely used as a solvent in paints, lacquers, adhesives and in cleaning and degreasing agents.

What are the hazards of ethanol?

Ethanol is a volatile colourless clear liquid used in many production processes. Workers can come into contact with it in the form of vapour, which they then inhale, or through the skin, for example when disinfecting. This can have adverse health effects. In the Netherlands, ethanol is on the SZW list as a carcinogen. (In Belgium and Germany, among others, this is not (yet) the case) Depending on the duration and nature of exposure to ethanol, the effects on humans can vary. That is why the government sets a maximum acceptable concentration (MAC) for ethanol in the workplace, as it does for many other substances.

Storage and transport

Ethanol is a highly flammable substance. This has implications for the transport, storage and handling of this substance.
